January 2009
NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT
What a great demonstration we had at the January meeting! If you missed it because of the cold weather, you really missed an outstanding program with Matthew Hill. Those who braved the cold will remember this meeting for a while. Was it 13 or 14 degrees when the meeting started? Thanks to all who brought heaters because we were able to get things warmed up fairly well.
We also want to thank James and Ruby for hosting the meeting and for having Matthew stay at their home. The lunch was outstanding. In the afternoon, Matthew had an extended demonstration using dyes and pyrography. The interesting thing about the wood burning is that he did most of it with simple soldering irons using various sized soldering tips. No expensive wood burning kits to order.
The SWAT representatives met in January and as you all know, SWAT will be back in Waco this year but in August (27,28,29). We will have a few things to discuss at our meeting regarding our part in getting it off the ground. Thanks go to Jan and Tom for attending the meeting in my stead. I’m sure they will have a full report for us on Saturday. We have been asked by SWAT to be the “host” club. That primarily entails our making table centerpieces for the banquet. I feel certain that we can accomplish that.
One of the things that we have planned for the fairly near future is to have some of our club member’s turnings exhibited at one of the local places of business, theater, etc. We have had some of our members searching out places where we can exhibit our turnings and it’s looking like we may have a spot or two. We hope to have pieces turned by various levels of turners—from beginner to advanced and in several styles of turning. More information to come.
We will be back at TSTC for our February meeting. And, that promises to be a good one. Joel Crabbe will be demonstrating turning a basic cone box, with variations. We always look forward to showing off the talents of our own club members and we thank Joel for doing the demonstration.
It’s still a bit cold and damp in most of our shops, but put on another sweat shirt and get some turning done! See you Saturday.
Janice
