Presidential Notes:
It seems that winter has set in earlier than usual this year. I’ve heard it’s going to be colder and wetter than usual. I’ll admit that I haven’t been moved to turn very much on these cold, wet days, but I am very excited about our December meeting as it is our annual Christmas party and a time when we enjoy bringing our guests to let them share in a little bit of the fun that we have every month.
If you have not yet let Bill Meador know what dish you plan to bring to the luncheon on Saturday, please call or email him so that we can get the menu worked out. I have never known, however, of a single luncheon that we did not have PLENTY of food and I thank all of you for your generous participation.
Remember, our meeting starts at 10:00 instead of our regular 9:00am meeting time. We will have the top turning contests and our ornament exchange. We will also be announcing this year’s recipient of our Bill Meador Award. If you have turned your segments for the walking stick, please bring them to me at the meeting and I’ll get the pieces assembled for a proper presentation in January. The segments must have a ¾” hole in the center, be 2 ½” in diameter and can be from 2” to 4” in height.
The top spinning competition will include a winner for the largest top, the smallest top and the longest spinning top. If you have tops for the Toys for Tots, they must be in by Dec. 10. Check your emails from Bill for specifics.
BVW will be submitting a request for an AAW grant to purchase a mid-sized lathe for TSTC. The lathe would be available for both TSTC students and BVW demonstrations. The grant deadline is January 15 and we will know by mid-March if we have been selected as a recipient.
Looking forward to January, we will have the nationally known turner, Matthew Hill as our guest. He will then have hands-on classes Sunday and Monday following the meeting. More details to follow as to how we will handle Matthew’s demonstration and what the fee will be for those attending that demonstration.
Well, push has come to shove. I have not yet turned my ornament for the exchange and I must decide if I will turn it in 40 or 48 degree temperatures. I know that “envy” is evil but I do envy those of you with heated and cooled shops just a little bit—OK, A LOT! See you Saturday.
