Presidential Notes: A big “Thank you” to Tony Kosta who led in arranging for us to meet at the Community Center in Harker Heights for the July meeting. It is an excellent facility and I am sure that we want to keep it in mind for future shop crawls.

We also want to thank Johnny Farmer for arranging to have David Dick from the Central Texas club as our demonstrator. I hope that many of you will be sporting 36” tall wine goblets and candle holders in the near future.

Speaking of new places to meet—we will be having our first meeting at the TSTC campus in Waco on Aug. 8. The doors will be unlocked at 8:30 and depending on the temperature in the shop, we may have the demo first then move to the air conditioned classroom for the rest of our meeting. Michael Hubbard, the instructor, says that some of his students are interested in turning and plan to attend the meeting. Please look at the web site for directions for getting to the campus.

A welcome to our newest member, Randall Hassig, who has moved to this area from Houston where he and I first knew each other in the Gulf Coast club. Randall is a real go-to kind of member who enjoys woodturning and helping out in lots of different capacities.

I was so glad to see so many members (13) who participated in our first Block Party. Don’t forget to turn your wood and bring it back to the original owner. I was asked whether or not we might add additional wood or enhancements to the original “block,” and I think that would be perfectly okay. Be sure to sign the turning.

Our demonstration this month will be my practice run-through for SWAT—“The Secrets of Turning Back Yard Pine.’’ Trust me, after turning the first few pieces, I felt like the secret is, “Don’t turn it!” After talking to a goodly number of turners about my mishaps, and by a lot of trial and error, I hope I have finally hit upon a good way to turn the pine without it checking while bringing out the translucent quality that makes pine so appealing.

The Appletree Show at the Heart of Texas Coliseum in Waco is coming up Nov. 6, 7. We have several who have volunteered to attend and do demonstrations (Charlie, Joel, Bill, Jan and Tom, Ed, Janice). If you are interested, please mark your calendar to be there on either Friday or Saturday or both days. More information will follow.

It’s hot, but get out the box fan if you don’t have AC in your shop and let the chips fly! See you Saturday.
