Presidential Notes: One thing about living in Central Texas that I have discovered is that it is either really hot or really cold and there is not a whole lot in between. I don’t know where our spring went but it has gone. I envy those of you who have AC in your shops—you know that is one of the criteria for becoming a professional turner, so I’ve been told.
The weather has been brutal but Brazos Valley Woodturners has been fantastic. I want to thank Peter Garrett for last month’s demonstration on using various kinds of inlays. We had a great picnic and I thank Larry Walrath for being our grilling chef and for those of you who brought all the goodies to go with our burgers and dogs.
I also enjoyed our first try at a wood and tool swap. It seems that a good amount of merchandise was moving about and I hope that we can do this on a somewhat regular basis.
Jan and Tom Dean went to the TSTC campus to look at the facility as a possible meeting site. They reported back that it is a very nice space with a large shop area and a classroom that we can use. There is also some storage space available for us. We’ll get a full report from them at our July meeting.
The July meeting will be one of our Shop Crawl meetings and it will be at the Community Center in Harker Heights. Directions are on the website. We look forward to visiting a new facility and to the demonstration by David Dick. David has a technique for making goblets that uses joinery.
The July meeting will be the first of our “Block Party” meetings. All of you are invited to bring a piece of wood that is no larger than 6”X6”X4.” These blocks of wood will be numbered and all who bring a piece will draw out a number and that is the piece you must turn and bring back for the August meeting. The turned object and its design are at the complete discretion of the turner. This is another great way to collect turnings from other club members.
Try to stay cool and make some shavings!
