Brazos Valley Woodturners Monthly Newsletter

New business:

The President challenge for April is to make a weed pot.

There was a discussion about a new challenge exchange and block party. It was decided to try each one in a different quarter this year.

Tony has acquired Harker Heights Rec Center for meetings at no charge. We will do our shop crawl in July there to see how it works out. Maynard and Bill will check out Lowe’s, Home Depot, TSTC and Temple schools.

Our guest turners are paid 30 cent a mile and a $25.00 gift certificate at this time. New idea is to pay them a flat $75.00 and as usual an offer of a members house to stay in. A motion was made by Bill Meador and seconded by Tony Kosta to adopt this idea. The motion passed.

Safety Minute:

Tom Rezach Jr. showed us some good tips for working around the band saw, pictures are on the web site.

Demonstration:

Roger Jones brought us his tools and techniques for making a goblet. This should inspire a few goblets for the next instant gallery.

Bring Back auction:

Bill Meador got Joel's square box. Two of Roger's goblets went out to Joel and Jan. Roger got Jan's pink ivory pen. Tom Rezach's inside out vase went to Tom Dean

Instant Gallery and other pictures and more details are posted on the bvwt.org website.

Finances:

Note From the President:

The April meeting should prove to be an exciting one. For one thing, it will be the day before Easter, we will meet in a facility entirely new to our club—the Homestead Traditional Crafts Village—and we will have a guest turner—Dan Henry from the Hunt County Club. Now that’s excitement!

Johnny Farmer has done an outstanding job of bringing us outstanding demonstrations and this month will be no different. We are glad to welcome Dan Henry from Hunt County who is well known for his segmented turning.

We have been talking about new meeting facilities and one of our guests, Peter Garrett, works at the Homestead Village and has arranged for us to have our meeting there. To get there, take I-35 north to Elm Mott and turn left at exit #343. Go 3 miles and turn right on FM933 for 1/5 miles. Then turn left on Halbert Lane for .5 mile.

Don’t forget the President’s Challenge for April—to turn a weed pot. Remember, these will be judged and there will be a special prize for the winner.

I want to thank Roger Jones for his demonstration in March of a long-stemmed goblet. I also thank Tom Rezach for his Safety Minute and Keeley Guthrie for bringing the refreshments.

The weather is warming up and there are no excuses for us not to get out to the workshop and make some shavings. Enjoy the spring because it will soon be summer and too hot to turn!
