February 2009
Old Business
A complete set of SWAT demonstration DVD’s has been purchased by the club and will be available as soon as Bill Meador, librarian, has a chance to process them.
Logo Wear—Jan and Tom Dean will bring club logo wear that was order several months ago to the March meeting.
End Grain Sealer—Will be available at the March meeting for $12 per gallon. You will need to bring your own container, such as a gallon gasoline can.
Tool Handling classes—The classes continue to be filled and we have members signed up for the February class.
New business
New Meeting Site—Our group continues to grow and we are looking for a new meeting site. One possibility is the Recreation Center in Harker Heights.
SWAT Demonstrators—Anyone wishing to demonstrate at this year’s SWAT symposium in Wichita Falls will need to fill out an application blank. They are available on line or several sheets were available at the meeting.
New club lathe—We have not yet heard from AAW as to whether we have been approved for the grant to purchase a club lathe. Charlie Lewandowski offered to lend necessary money to the club to purchase the lathe, if needed. Tom and Jan Dean indicated that they had an extra lathe that they would consider donating to the club.
AAW Demonstration DVD’s—Are available in two volumes at $25 each. The club approved the purchase of the DVD’s. (I didn’t write down who moved and who seconded)
SAFETY MINUTE
Maynard Miller introduced a new feature that we will have at each meeting—the Safety Minute. Tom Rezach volunteered to do the Safety Minute for the March meeting.
Demonstration
Tom Rezach demonstrated turning inside/outside vases, a concept inspired by inside/outside ornaments.

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
PRESENT: Janice, Larry, Roger, Johnny, Jan
Roger proposed that we have a “Challenge” turning that would allow turners to make pieces, then these pieces would become part of an exchange at the next meeting. This would allow club members to begin collecting pieces from other club members. Roger will discuss this at the March Meeting.
Janice said that she would revive the “President’s Challenge” to turn pieces that might be unusual or very different from what we might usually turn.
PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE FOR APRIL
I invite each of you to turn an old-fashioned weed pot, one that might be suitable for holding wild flowers.
Note From the President
It’s warming up outside and, hopefully, all of you are out in the shop turning away. There’s nothing like the smell of mesquite in the morning. (I know, that was pathetic.)
I want to thank Tom Rezach for hosting our meeting in February and for his demonstration on turning inside/outside vases. Most of us are familiar with inside/outside ornaments but the concept can be taken in many other directions. We all want to thank Keeley Guthrie for the outstanding job she is doing as our Hospitality Chairman.
We started a new monthly feature in February—The Safety Minute. Maynard Miller was our first member to deliver a short message regarding safety in the shop. Tom Rezach will be delivering our Safety Minute at the March meeting. I know that all of you have had at least one harrowing experience and I plan to call on you for one of our Safety Minute messages.
Remember to bring your container if you plan to purchase end grain sealer. The cost is $12 per gallon.
Larry Walrath demonstrated the McNaughton boring system for the Fort Worth club in February. We have so many talented turners in our group, and we are especially grateful for Larry and his skills.
May I be allowed to boast briefly? I attended the Gulf Coast Woodturners February meeting in Houston and a representative of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft was in attendance to select turnings for an exhibit at the Center, a school/studio/museum for the advancement of art and craft. Two of my turnings were chosen for the exhibit that will run through April 15, and one was the large elm bowl that James Norton agreeably tossed in my direction to finish. The other was the little gnarly box with the worm and seedpods inside. She said it made her smile. (OK, I’ll take that.)
There’s no time to waste. Sharpen the tools, select the wood and make some shavings!
