Tool Handling Class—Last Saturday’s class was very successful. The next class will be January 24 from 9:00-5:00. The class is free and new members are particularly urged to attend. The class will be offered in February and March or until all who want to take the class have had a chance to do so. The class is limited to 3 turners.
Sealer—The 55 gallons of wood sealer are here. James Norton moved and Ed Jarvis seconded that the club charge members $12 per gallon to purchase the sealer. Members will need to bring their own container that can easily be filled by the spigot shown. The motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
SWAT—The Executive Committee will meet January 24 at the Waco Hilton. James and Janice will attend the meeting. SWAT demo DVD’s are available at $2 each. It was moved by Roger and seconded by Johnny that we purchase the DVD set, depending on final cost. After discussion that suggested that we were really only interested in a few of the DVD’s, not the entire set, the vote was taken and the motion was defeated in a 10-8 vote. James then moved that we purchase only lead demonstrator DVD’s if SWAT will make those available to us. Bill seconded the motion. The motion carried.
AAW Demo DVD’s—Janice will contact AAW to see whether or not 2008 symposium demo DVD’s are available for purchase.
Telephone Numbers—We need to have Gloria, Dick and Johnny update their telephone numbers for the roster.
New Officers—Need to go by Genco Bank and sign the signature card. Old officer names need to be removed.
AAW Insurance—Only chapter members who are also AAW members are covered in case there is a turning accident and someone is hurt, therefore, any BVW members who does a club demonstration will also need to be an AAW member. Janice will send for a new copy of AAW insurance coverage for the coming year.
Sketch Up—Wood Magazine lists a free design computer package for woodworking called Sketch Up. Go on line for a look.
Sorby Website—Lists free videos on many subjects that can be ordered.
DEMONSTRATION:
Keeley Guthrie demonstrated the basics of wood chip carving. Each member was given a piece of wood with two patterns and a carving knife to use to practice making basic cuts. Keeley also showed the group how to use oil pencils to color the wood, thus enhancing the design.

BRAZOS VALLEY WOODTURNERS
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING MINUTES, 1/10/09
PRESENT: Janice Levi, Larry Walrath, Roger Jones, Johnny Farmer
GUESTS PRESENT: James Norton, Ken Taylor, Wes Taylor, Ed Jarvis, Joel Crabbe
The Executive Board met following the regular BVW meeting at Ruthie’s Restaurant for a working lunch. Officer reports were made as follows:
Web site/Newsletter (Larry Walrath)
Will feature pictures of turnings and officers. Member pictures will be added later
The newsletter will be made available on line to all to see and those who do not have computers will continue to receive copies by mail.
Brochures advertising the club will be posted in “wood working” stores.
The website will soon feature a blog so that members can add comments and pictures. A forum can also be developed on the blog site.
Events Coordinator (Johnny Farmer)
Will solicit guest turners from other Texas clubs and states nearby. Matthew Hill from Oklahoma (demonstrated at SWAT) was mentioned. Jerry Bennett from GCWA, who does abstract segmented turnings was also mentioned.
Silent Auction—Having a silent auction at the picnic was discussed. Members would bring tools and wood to donate to the auction. All proceeds would go to the club to aid in paying demonstrators from other clubs and states mileage expenses.
Tool/Wood swap—Members wishing to sell wood or tools at a meeting could be given an opportunity to do so with the club collecting 10% of the fees earned. This could be done in conjunction with any regular meeting.
Safety Minute—We talked about the possibility of adding a brief safety awareness minute to be delivered by various club members. This would involve more members in the actual meeting. They could talk about any safety issue near and dear to their own hearts.
Meeting Facility
1. It was generally discussed that our meeting space is rapidly becoming too small. Contact will be made with various colleges, high schools, wood working stores to see if arrangements can be made for us to use their facility. If a high school shop is used, we could include some meeting dates to teach high school aged students. It was also agreed that the Waco area still seems best for our membership, although the Temple area might also be considered.
